BRISTOL, Tenn. – King University head women's basketball coach Josh Thompson announced the hire of Whitney Mitchell '17 as an assistant coach. Mitchell played for Thompson and helped the Tornado reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 2016-17.
"I am excited and very thankful for this opportunity," Mitchell said. "This will definitely be an incredible new adventure for me. I just want to thank Coach Thompson for this opportunity. I am very happy to be back in the place where everything started."
During her playing career, Mitchell was a two-time All-Conference Carolinas selection, garnering first team honors during her senior campaign. In her career, she scored 981 points and handed out 269 assists. She set career-highs, scoring 12.3 points and dishing out 2.9 assists per game as a senior.
"I'm very excited to add Whitney to our coaching staff," Thompson said. "She brings a wealth of basketball knowledge and she knows our system very well. She has a passion for the game of basketball and for coaching. That passion will serve her well as a coach and will help our program to reach our goals."
During her senior season, 2016-17, Mitchell helped lead the Tornado to their first Conference Carolinas Tournament title, earning their first NCAA Tournament berth. She made one free throw with seven seconds left, giving King the lead and eventual victory over top seed and 22nd-ranked Limestone College in the conference title game.
