Fourth quarter downs Tornado at BAC

BELMONT, N.C. – The King University women's basketball team held the lead over Belmont Abbey College, who is ranked 25th in the D2SIDA poll and receiving votes in the WBCA poll, after three quarters. The Crusaders used a big fourth quarter to defeat the Tornado 75-70.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Period

  • The teams traded blows in the early going as Kiki Samsel hit a triple to give King a 7-6 lead four minutes into the contest.
  • However, the Crusaders answered back with five straight points before a Trinity Lee layup pulled King within 14-13.
  • With 2:33 remaining in the quarter, Belmont Abbey's Taylor Stelley hit a jump shot to give the Crusaders a 16-13 lead.
  • The King deficit grew to 20-15 after Maria Kulhman knocked down a triple before West scored in the final 51 seconds to cut the Belmont Abbey lead to 23-17 after the first quarter.

Second Period

  • Holloway opened up the second quarter with a triple to cut the King deficit to 24-20 in the opening minute.
  • However, Ali Golden scored back-to-back baskets to even the score 24-24.
  • King regained the lead with 6:55 remaining after Amaya Lee hit a jump shot to pull the Tornado ahead 26-24.
  • The Crusaders went on a 4-0 run in the middle of the period, but King closed out the final minutes of the quarter on a 6-0 run to grab a 35-28 lead at the break.

Third Period

  • Belmont Abbey worked their way back into the contest in the first minute of the period, going on a 5-0 run to even the score 37-37.
  • In the middle of the quarter, King found their momentum on offense and went on a 7-0 run, with Ryleigh Fritz adding five of the seven points to give King a 46-39 lead.
  • However, the Crusaders came back with a 6-0 run, evening the score 48-48 with three minutes remaining in the period.
  • Ali Golden scored a basket in the final minute of the quarter, giving King a 50-48 lead going into the final period.

Fourth Period

  • The Crusaders offense started off the final period strong, going on a 24-6 run that vaulted the Crusaders to a 72-56 lead with less than four minutes remaining.
  • King answered back with a 12-2 run, cutting the deficit to 74-70, but the Crusaders defense kept the Tornado scoreless in the final 30 seconds to take the contest 75-70

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Golden led King with 19 points, going 8-for-16 from the field goal.
  • Kori West grabbed seven rebounds and added 12 points.

FOR THE FOES

  • Maria Kuhlman led Belmont Abbey with 16 points to go along with three rebounds and two assists.
  • Keyanna Spivey accounted for 13 points while Brittany Autry chipped in with 12 points and eight rebounds.

  • King travels to Banner Elk, N.C. to face Lees-McRae College at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
