NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Tornado Men's and Women's Golf finished the first round of the Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate tournament, held at the Sea Trail Golf Club, on Monday afternoon. After the first 18 holes of play, Ross Maietta and Richard Powell's share for sixth place helped the men's team to a third place overall finish. Elizabeth Swallow served up King's third top-10 finish and has the women in seventh place.
Richard Powell (Hixson, Tenn.) and Ross Maietta (Bexley, England) each finished with first round 70s after day one of the Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate, earning them a share of sixth place overall. Powell shot 35 on both the front and back nine to tally his 70. Maietta was one shot off the pace of his senior teammate but made up for it on the back nine with a 34 to pull back level with Powell.
Maeitta led the field in par-4 scoring at two-under par and averaged 3.80 strokes per hole. Both Powell and Maietta registered 14 pars, finishing among eight players with the second-most pars after day one.
Sophomore Taylor Gouge (Elizabethton, Tenn.) finished in a tie for 15th position with a one-over par 71 (36-35). Also with a top-20 finish was sophomore John Scott (Glasgow, Scotland) with a two-over 72 (37-35).
King finished third overall out of 15 teams at the tournament with a first round 283 among its starting five. Only three strokes separate them from tournament leader Mount Olive College (280) and only one stroke behind Newberry College (282).
The Lady Tornado finished seventh overall out of 15 teams, led by freshman Elizabeth Swallow. The Berkshire, England native posted her third round finishing inside the top-10 with a share of ninth place behind a 75 (39-36) through 18 holes.
Cortnee Young (Cleveland, Tenn.) finished inside the top-25 with a first round 80 (41-39) on the par-72 course. Behind Young was Anna Walker (Marion, Va.) who concluded with a 82 (49-43) followed by Esther Gandarias and Kerby Jones who both posted an 83 scorecard.
Day two of the Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate will begin Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. from Sea Trails Golf Club (72-5,988) in North Myrtle Beach, S.C.
