Phelps was named the women's basketball interim head coach in the fall of 2021 after three seasons serving as an assistant for the men's program. In his first season leading the women's program, the Tornado finished sixth in the Conference Carolinas standings. Following the season, the interim tag was removed as Phelps elevated to head coach.

Year-By-Year Season Recaps - Women's Basketball Head Coach
2022-23: The Tornado played one of the toughest schedules in the region and possibly the country, finishing 9-21 overall and 8-12 in Conference Carolinas play. King earned the ninth seed in the Conference Carolinas Women's Basketball Championship and topped eighth seed Barton in the opening round. However, the Tornado fell at fifth seed Chowan in the second round. Earlier in the season, Jaden Potts drilled three-point basket at the buzzer to give King a 44-42 win at Erskine. The Tornado later overcame a 19-point deficit to defeat Emmanuel at home. Jhayda McKinney, Alexa Gramann and Potts all earned College Sports Communicators Academic All-District.
2021-22: In his first leading the women's program, Phelps led the Tornado to a 13-13 overall record, going 12-10 in Conference Carolinas play. The Tornado opened the season 9-4 with 12 players, but due to injuries and cancelations, the Tornado went 32 days without playing a game and saw their roster size fall to seven players. King closed the season going 4-9 down the stretch, but earned the sixth seed in the Conference Carolinas Women's Basketball Championship and hosted Francis Marion in the second round of the tournament. The Tornado made a valiant comeback, but ultimately fell to the eventual tournament runner-up 87-84. Trinity Lee was selected first team All-Conference Carolinas and earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors. King finished near the top of the league in many statistical categories, as they finished third in scoring offense, free throw percentage, and turnovers forced, and fourth in three-point field goal percentage. Brianna Dunbar ranked 23rd in NCAA Division II in free throws attempted.
Phelps joined the Tornado men's basketball staff prior to the 2018-19 season and was elevated to assistant coach prior to the 2019-20 season.

2020-21: Phelps helped transition the program to new head coach Jason Gillespie. In what was a tumultuous season, King posted a 6-12 overall record while going 5-10 in Conference Carolinas play. King finished eighth in the conference tournament, falling at top seed Emmanuel in a conference tournament quarterfinal. King ranked second in the league and 14th in all of NCAA Division II, scoring 85.2 points per game. The Tornado also led the league in rebounding, grabbing 39.6 rebounds per game, including 15.4 offense boards per contest. That mark of 15.4 offense rebounds per game ranked fifth in all of NCAA Division II.
2019-20: Phelps helped the Tornado post a 23-7 record, going 16-4 in Conference Carolinas play, en route to the Conference Carolinas regular season title. Phelps served as interim head coach from three games in the middle of the season following an injury to the head coach. The Tornado won the first game on the road in double overtime and stayed atop the conference standings. Under Phelps' tutelage, the Tornado finished near the top of the league in numerous offensive statistic categories and led the league in defensive three-point field goal percentage. During the season, the Tornado received votes in the D2SIDA poll and were ranked 25th on February 18. King saw their season come to an end in the Conference Carolinas semifinals to Southern Wesleyan. Jordan Floyd led the nation in scoring, earning Rob Lenz National Player of the Year honors from the D2CCA. He was an All-America, All-Region and all-conference selection as well as Conference Carolinas Player of the Year. James Brown earned second team all-conference honors and was named Conference Carolinas Scholar-Athlete of the Year as well as garnering CoSIDA Academic All-District recognition.
2018-19:Â King started out 8-3 in the first semester before struggling in January and February, finishing with an overall record of 15-14. The Tornado nearly pulled an upset in a Conference Carolinas Men's Basketball Championship quarterfinal, falling at Barton in overtime. King ranked third in the league in three-point baskets made per game, and their defense was stout. The Tornado were second in opponents' three-point field goal percentage and second in steals per game. James Brown garnered third team All-Conference Carolinas honors to lead the Tornado.
Prior to King
Phelps came to King with a plethora of coaching experience at different camps, including at Michigan University, Xavier University, Ohio State University, University of Virginia, and Cedarville University. He served as a volunteer assistant coach at Urbana University and Cedarville where he helped with recruiting and strength & conditioning program in the offseason. Phelps served as a volunteer Player Development Instructor at Elev8 Sports Institute where he helped develop professional and semi-pro athletes. He was also assistant varsity boy s basketball coach at Emmanuel Christian Academy.

Phelps played collegiate basketball at Clark Community College before transferring to Henderson State University. While at Henderson State University Phelps helped lead his team to a Gulf South Conference West Division regular season championship a conference tournament runner-up finish. Coach Phelps' playing resume also includes playing in the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Championship as team receiving an at-large bid. However, his playing career would come to an end after a second-round appearance during the national tournament.
Personal
Phelps graduated from Henderson State with a Bachelor of Science degree in Sport and Community Recreation in 2007. Phelps earned his Master of Science degree in Sports Administration from Henderson State University 2009.
His wife, Kiana is a Social Worker for the City of Bristol Virginia. They’re a family of five with have three children, Marquis, Octavia, and Michael.
