Tornado excited to start 2013-14 campaign

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University men's wrestling team had successful dual meet results last season, but the year ended in disappointment for the Tornado. The 2013-14 version of King's squad is prepared and ready to improve upon their regional performance last season.

In 2012-13, King turned in very good results in the dual meet portion of their schedule as they defeated nationally ranked, #15 Maryville University as well as regional rivals Lake Erie College and Limestone College. However, the Tornado did not have a good showing at the NCAA Division II Super Region Championships, giving the Tornado a goal to shoot for this season.

King will be led by a solid core of returners this season, including Cody Davis (197 pounds), Cullen King (133 pounds) and Jeremy Miller (157 pounds). Davis turned in a solid freshman campaign a season ago while Miller had a stellar sophomore season where he finished in the top-6 of the NCAA Division II Regional.

Head coach Nate Moorman will also rely on three wrestlers that started in the NCAA Division II Regionals, John Jones, Collin Crume and Garrett Fosdyck. Crume and Fosdyck both had great seasons, as the duo was seeded going into the regional tournament, Crume at the 133 pound weight class, and Fosdyck at the heavyweight classification.

This returning core will be joined by a very talented group of newcomers, including junior college national champion Justin Cash. Cash wrestled for Rend Lake College the last two seasons and won the national championship at the 157 pound weight class a season ago. Bryce Killian will also be relied upon at the 141 pound weight class as he placed at the state tournament in Pennsylvania last season. He also has earned medals at two of the most competitive high school tournaments in the country, the Beast of the East as well as the Super 32.

Moorman also brings in three wrestlers from Grundy, Va., two of which won two state titles in Virginia. Tyler McClanahan won two titles at the 174 pound weight class while Justin Street won a pair of titles at 133 pounds. Sean Van Dyke is also part of this group, having qualified for the state final four times at the 133 pound weight class in Virginia. Van Dyke is also an Arena World Runner-up.

The Tornado open the 2013-14 season on November 2 at the Citadel Open in Charleston, S.C. King hosts the King Open on November 24 before hosting their first dual match of the season on January 15 against Limestone College. The NCAA Division II Regional Championships will take place on March 1-2 in Tiffin, Ohio while the championships are scheduled for March 14 in Cleveland, Ohio.
