King splits two matches at Coker Duals

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The King University men's wrestling team opened their dual meet season on Saturday at the Coker College Duals. The Tornado took a 27-14 win over Brewton-Parker College before falling to the host Cobras 23-15.

Reed Jacks got the Tornado on the board against Brewton-Parker as he pinned Immanuel Henderson at 125 pounds to give King a 6-0 lead. D'Marcus Spencer stretched the lead to 9-0 after he defeated Will Hale 4-2 at 133 pounds. The Barons took three points at 141 pounds before Frank Yattoni IV and Chance Smith earned back-to-back victories to stretch the Torando lead to 19-3. Yattoni defeated Orlando Medina 15-7 on a major decision at 149 pounds while Smith pinned Justin Sperin at 157 pounds.

Brewton-Parker then rolled off three straight wins at 165, 174 and 184 pounds to cut their deficit to 19-15 with two matches remaining. Cody Davis pinned Mavric Rechsteiner at 197 to stretch the lead to 25-15, and Garrett Fosdyck topped Jake Shumpert 9-4 at 285 pounds as King took the match 27-14.

The Tornado then faced Coker, who fell to Brewton-Parker to start the day. Coker started with a win at 125 before Spencer won on a tiebreaker, 3-1 over Charlie Huff at 133 to even the score at three apiece. Coker then took three straight wins to stretch their lead to 14-3 before King won on a pin at 165 to earn six points. The Cobras earned a 23-9 lead before Davis and Fosdyck won the final two matches of the dual. Davis defeated Robert Parland 4-3 at 197, and Fosdyck took a tiebreaker two 6-3 over Austin Akins at 285 as Coker took the dual 23-15.

The Tornado will be in action again on Wednesday when the host Limestone College in the Student Center Complex. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
