King unable to even the score against Campbellsville in NCCAA opener

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - King College opened the 2010 NCCAA Division I Women's Volleyball National Championship Thursday with a 3-0 defeat in pool play against Campbellsville (Ky.) University.

King, the event's No. 7 seed, will take on No. 10 Southeastern (Fla.) University at 4 p.m.

The set scores saw Campbellsville win 25-22, 25-20 and 25-21.

The Lady Tornado got a dozen kills from Morgan Machen (Kingsport, Tenn.). Shannon Earwood (Carson City, Nev.) provided 26 assists. Rachel Harding (Abingdon, Va.) finished with 24 digs with another 10 by Lindsey Burke (Nickelsville, Va.). Harding's 24 digs are the most by a Lady Tornado in a three-set contest this season.

Thursday's contest was the second straight time King and Campbellsville played as Campbellsville left with the NCCAA Mid-East Region championship after a 3-1 decision on Nov. 20.

The sweep was just the third time this season King was shutout and the Lady Tornado have lost the first set for the seventh time in 2010.

King lost the first pool play contest a season ago as well at the nationals, a 3-2 decision against Northwestern (Minn.).
