King Volleyball Earns AVCA Team Academic Award


BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King College volleyball team was recognized nationally after earning the 2010-11 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award. They are one of a record-breaking 481 schools between nine divisions of student-athletes ranging from high school to NCAA Division I to receive the award.

King Volleyball contributed toward breaking records in total number of schools overall and total Division II schools to receive the award. The previous record for total number of schools to win the award was 450, set after the 2009-10 season. At the Division II level, King was one of a record 57 programs to earn the honor.

"This is something that we take pride in and set as a goal every year," said women's volleyball head coach Chris Toomey. "It makes me proud as a coach that our student-athletes can balance training, competing and their academics with our rigorous schedule."

To earn consideration for the award, a team must display excellence in the classroom by maintaining a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.

In a release from the organization naming the award-winning schools, AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer said, "A hearty congratulations to all the volleyball coaches whose teams won the 2011 AVCA Team Academic Award. Teams do not succeed in the classroom by accident any more so than they do on the court.  The same coach who taught them volleyball skills cared enough about their academic achievement to gather their grades, calculate their GPA, and submit a nomination on their behalf. In doing so, these coaches sent a clear message that classroom success is just as important as court success.  All involved should celebrate this award!"

Since the Team Academic Award was first given in 1993, award recipient numbers have risen 674 percent. Since 2000-01, the number of recipients has risen in all but one year.
