Tornado cap regular season with sweep of VI

BRSITOL, Tenn. – After clinching their first Conference Carolinas championship earlier in the afternoon, the King University women's volleyball team capped the regular season with a 3-0 sweep of crosstown rival Virginia Intermont College. Senior Kelsey Griffitts led the attack on Senior Day with nine kills and an attack percentage of .562.

The King offense picked up right where it left off this in their win over Mount Olive as the Tornado hit .356 in the match, including .423 in the first set. King (30-4) on made one attack error in the first set as Maribeth Kern and Olivia Underwood both had kills on their 6-0 run to start the match. The Tornado gradually extended their lead, before Grace Underwood registered her first kill of the match to give King a chance a set point. Grace Underwood went back to serve, and served up an ace to give King the 25-10 win.

The Tornado opened the second set on another 6-0 run, and held a 9-2 advantage following a Summer Kremer. However, Virginia Intermont (12-18) began to comeback as they pulled within 12-9 of the Tornado before Kremer registered another kill to start a 5-0 run. Lauren Willoughby force a Cobra timeout with King leading 19-11 and again at 23-12 as King took the set 25-14.

The third set was played tight, but the Tornado used a 4-0 run to gain control of the frame, capped by a Willoughby kill that gave King a 19-13. The Cobras got back within two at 21-19 before Griffitts accounted for a pair of kills to give the Tornado a 23-20 lead. Hannah Bug Smyth then served up an ace before Willoughby ended the match with her ninth kill to give King the 25-20 win.

Prior to the match, King honored their three seniors, Griffitts, Tiffany Baines and Mariah Herington. Baines registered seven digs in the match while accounted for four digs.

Griffitts and Willoughby paced the Tornado offense with nine kills apiece while Kremer chipped in with seven kills. Payton Tipton posted a team-high 17 digs, and Kern accounted for 10 digs. Olivia Underwood dished a team-high 28 assists in the win.

The Tornado will be the No. 2 seed in the Conference Carolinas Tournament which starts next Saturday, November 16. King will host No. 7 Converse College in quarterfinals on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
