BRISTOL, Tenn. – It seemed like the King University women's volleyball team could do no wrong on Friday night in the Student Center when they took on Barton College in a key Conference Carolinas tilt. The Tornado defense got to nearly every ball, and kept many long rallies going with their team hustle as they swept the Bulldogs 25-18, 25-13, 25-15.
The first set was tight until Jordan Baty gave King (12-9, 6-4 CC) a 17-15 lead with one of her five kills in the match to spark the Tornado offense. After a Bulldog timeout and kill, Lauren Willoughby and Summer Kremer teamed up for back-to-back kills to extend the lead before a Sarah Collins kill and Willoughby ace forced another Barton timeout. Kremer then posted a pair of kills to give King the opening set, 25-18.
The Tornado defense settle in in the second set, holding Barton (7-12, 5-4 CC) to a .000 attack percentage, compiling 19 digs in the frame. The offense followed the solid defense, using a 7-2 run to gain a 15-9 advantage. Kremer and Willoughby posted back-to-back kills on a 3-0 run that stretched the lead to 18-10 before Kremer again posted a pair of kills to give King the second by the score of 25-13.
In the third set, the King offense posted their best set of the match, hitting a blistering .424 with 18 kills in the set. King jumped out to a 4-0 lead behind kills from Willoughby, Kremer and Collins, and Kremer eventually gave King a 19-9 advantage with one of her four kills in the set. Baty registered a pair of kills leading King to a chance a match point, and Olivia Underwood ended the set at 25-15 with her third kill of the match to give King the match.
Kremer led King with 13 kills against 2 errors on 35 attempts for an attack percentage of .314. Collins followed her with eight kills, posting a .429 attack percentage with only two errors on 14 attempts. Grace Underwood, Willoughby and Baty all chipped in with five kills while Olivia Underwood had three kills, 31 assists and three digs. Payton Tipton led the Tornado with 16 digs, and Casey Williams posted seven digs while Kremer and Brooke Calhoun had six digs apiece.
King will be in action again on Saturday when they host the University of Mount Olive at 2:00 p.m. Saturday is also Senior Day as King will honor their four seniors prior to the match.
