BRISTOL, Tenn. – Following a stellar opening month, the King University women's cross country team swept the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Runner of the Month awards. Kirstin Barton was selected ECAC Runner of the Month and Rebekah Thomas took home ECAC Rookie of the Month honors.
In September, Barton set three personal records in three races this season and won two Conference Carolinas Runner of the Week awards. She started with a 5k personal at the Tusculum Open where she finished runner-up with a time of 20:56.2.
The junior followed that with a 6k personal best time of 24:17.3 at the Virginia Tech Alumni Invitational. Most recently she finished seventh in a field of nearly 350 runners at the Greater Louisville Classic with a 5k time of 19:10.8. That was her first 5k time under 20 minutes and another personal record.
Thomas started her career with an eighth place finish at the Tusculum Open with a 5k time of 21:28.5. She bettered that mark with a time of 20:20.2 at the Greater Louisville Classic where she finished 51st in a field of nearly 350 runners. Her fastest 6k time of 25:04.1 came at the Virginia Tech Alumni Invitational where she finished 34th.
Barton and the Tornado will be in action again on October 12 at the Royals Cross Country Challenge in Charlotte, N.C.
