Offensive attack leads King past Emmanuel

BRISTOL, Tenn. – Home cooking might have been just what the doctor ordered as the King University women's volleyball team won their third straight match in the friendly confines of the Student Center  Complex on Friday night. The Tornado offense came ready to play in the first set as King took the Conference Carolinas match 3-0 from Emmanuel College.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Tornado started out on fire, hitting a blistering .407 in the first set and Lauren Willoughby posted four kills to lead King to the 25-17 first set win.
  • King gained control of the second set in the early going, jumping out to an 8-2 advantage. Ashleigh Manke registered five kills in King's 25-15 victory.
  • Emmanuel scored five straight points to pull within 12-11 of King in the third set before King rolled off six consecutive points to regain control of the set. The Tornado went on to take the frame 25-20 and the match 3-0.
  • Collins led King with nine kills on 12 attempts against one error for an impressive attack percentage of .471.
  • Willoughby and Manke followed with seven kills apiece for the Tornado.
  • Olivia Underwood handed out 23 assists and Amy Serowski led the defense with 16 digs.

FOR THE FOES

  • Erica Burnham led the Lions with eight kills while Julie de Blanck followed with six.
  • Burnham also led the team with eight digs.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • For Collins, the .471 attack percentage marks the third time she has hit over .400 with at least nine kills. Earlier in the year she posted attack percentages of .611 and .435.
  • The Tornado posted 11 service aces, marking the second time in three matches and third time this year they have had at least 10 aces in a match.

UP NEXT

  • King will be in action again on Saturday when they host Erskine College in a rematch of last year's Conference Carolinas Tournament championship match. First serve is slated for 2:00 p.m. in the Student Center Complex.
  • Emmanuel faces Lees-McRae College on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in Banner Elk, N.C.
