King closes weekend with victory over Queens

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The King University women's volleyball team closed the Queens University Tournament on a high note when they faced the hosts on Saturday night. Behind the stellar attack of Sarah Collins, the Tornado won the final three sets to take the match 3-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first set went back-and-forth in the early going before Queens pulled away to take the frame 25-21.
  • The Tornado had a lead early in the second set before the Royal scored four straight points to take a 12-11 lead. The set then stayed within a two point spread until King scored back-to-back points to take a 20-17 lead en route to a 25-20 set win.
  • King jumped out early in the third set to a 10-3 lead and ultimately taking a 2-1 lead in the match with the 25-18.
  • Queens didn't go away easy as they grabbed a quick 12-7 lead in the fourth set. However, King came back with a 6-0 run to take a 13-12 lead. The Tornado trailed again at 20-18 before scoring seven of the next eight points to take the set 25-21.
  • Collins had a stellar match, hitting .391 with 13 kills on 23 attempts against four errors.
  • Ashleigh Manke added 13 kills to along with five digs.
  • Amy Serowski led the Tornado with 16 digs from her libero position.
  • Lauren Willoughby accounted for 15 digs to go along with nine kills.
  • Olivia Underwood dished out 41 assists and accounted for seven digs.

FOR THE FOES

  • Jessica Raines led the Royals with nine kills.
  • Rebecca Cochran led Queens with a match-high 17 digs to go along with eight kills.
  • Merideth Jones added 14 digs and eight kills.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Collins' 13 kills marked a career-high, besting her previous high of 12 which she hit three times a season ago.
  • Manke also set a career-best with 13 kills, marking the first time she eclipsed the 10-kill plateau.
  • Willoughby's 15 digs was a career-best, topping her previous mark of 12 set in 2012.
  • Willoughby was also named to the all-tournament team.

UP NEXT

  • The Tornado will be in action again next weekend at the USC Aiken Tournament. King faces Fayetteville State University and Nova Southeastern University on Friday.
  • Queens faces Anderson University on Friday.
