King splits day one in Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. – King University baseball posted their first win of the season over Brevard College where the Tornado hit two out of the park landing a 12-6 victory. The Tornado finished the day facing off against Newberry College where they fell 11-5 to the Wolves.

SERIES HIGHLIGHTS

  • For the Tornado Rayn Sattz posted five hits going five-for nine with two doubles.
  • Mark Hecken recorded two hits in each game for King with two doubles.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS – Brevard

  • Leading off for King was Nicolas Keister with a double to left center. A Preston Douglas sacrifice fly out to center field would send him in to put up the first run on the board for the Tornado.
  • King would drive in a run again until the fourth inning when Austin Dayton ripped a home run over left field to give the Tornado a 2-1 lead.
  • In the fifth inning the Tornado plated five runs highlighted by a Douglas two-run home run that followed a Hencken RBI single to left field.
  • Posted another five runs in the sixth in fueled by a two run Sattz double to left field, followed by a run scoring double down the left field line from Dayton giving King a 12-1 lead at the end of the sixth.
  • The Tornados answered back in the seventh with a two run double down the left field line from Matthew Proffitt and a sacrifice fly out to right field tallying three runs in the inning.
  • Chipping into the Tornado lead Brevard added another two runs in the eighth inning off a Parker Hubbard home run to left field leaving the final score at 12-6 in favor of King

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS – Newberry

  • Newberry jumped with an early 3-0 lead in the first inning behind an Michael Gonzalez one run triple to right field.
  • An Anthony Hunt two-run double to left center field got the Tornado of the board in the second inning.
  • The Wolves were quick to answer back with a two-run double to right center from Smith in the bottom half of the inning.
  • Trejon Smith recorded a RBI double that would give Newberry a 8-2 lead over King in the fourth inning.
  • Responding in the fifth inning was Hencken who ripped a two-run double to left center field  that scored Keister and Hunt who had both hit doubles to get on base.
  • King posted one run in the seventh when Hencken scored off a wild pitch.
  • Newberry topped it off with three runs in the eighth inning behind a two run Smith single to center field and the score would be final at 11-5.

FOR THE FOES

  • For Brevard Proffitt grabbed two RBI, with two hits and Hubbard also marked two hits and an RBI.
  • Newberry's designated hitter Smith recorded three hits and four RBI. JoJo Bradley went four-for-four for Wolves, chipping in an RBI.

UP NEXT

  • King will be in action again on Sunday when they take on Young Harris College at 12:00 p.m. to conclude play at the Newberry Round Robin.
