Four Tornado take Conference Carolinas Weekly Awards

BRISTOL, Tenn. – Four King University student-athletes were selected for Conference Carolinas Weekly Awards on Wednesday. Trent Mahoney (men's wrestling), Madi Matthews (women's swimming), Jan Kuljak (men's swimming) and Alex Sodre (men's tennis) all garnered honors following their performance a week ago.

Mahoney was selected Conference Carolinas Wrestler of the Week after he capped a perfect regular season with a pair of pins on Thursday night against Queens University and the University of Mount Olive. He first pinned Mount Olive's Cody Smith in 4:07 before pinning Queens' Jude Lloyd in 3:35 to help lead King to a pair of dual victories. Mahoney finishes the regular season of his freshman season 9-0 with seven pins and one technical fall. The seven pins for Mahoney leads all of NCAA Division II.

This marks the first weekly award of Mahoney's career.

Matthews was named Conference Carolinas Women's Swimmer of the Week after helping the Tornado to a win at Chowan on Saturday. She took a win and runner-up finish and helped the 200 meter medley relay to a win. That relay team started the meet with a time of 2:09.54. She won the 100 meter freestyle with a time of 1:02.07 and took a runner-up finish in the 50 meter freestyle with a time of 28.26 seconds.

Matthews earns her first weekly award of the season and third of her career.

Kuljak garnered Conference Carolinas Men's Swimmer of the Week honors as he helped the Tornado to a win at Chowan with a pair of individual victories and a relay win. The Tornado won the 200 meter freestyle relay by nearly 10 seconds with a time of 3:38.44. Kuljak won the 200 meter freestyle with a time of 1:58.06 before winning the 400 meter freestyle by seven seconds with a time of 4:11.76.

This is Kuljak's first weekly award this season, and second of his career.

Sodre was tabbed Conference Carolinas Men's Tennis Player of the Week after he started his sophomore season with a pair of wins, leading King to a dual victory over UVA Wise. Along with partner Nathan Snow, Sodre won the No. 1 doubles match over Jake Ferner and Dominic Hoffman 6-2, helping King to the doubles point. He then started singles play with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Ferner as King took the dual 4-3.

This marks the first weekly award for Sodre this season, and his first career weekly award.
