King extends win streak in win over Belmont Abbey

BELMONT, N.C.—The King University men's volleyball team won their fourth consecutive Conference Carolinas match Tuesday night, besting Belmont Abbey College 3-1. Jack Sarnowski posted 46 set assists, while Joshua Kim had 17 kills and Suetonius Harris added 15 for the Tornado.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
  • Belmont Abbey took an early 9-4 lead, forcing the Tornado to take their first timeout.
  • Coming out of the timeout, King scored three straight points, with Harris recording a kill and a service ace to make the score 9-7.
  • After getting to within 12-10, the Crusaders edged their lead to 13-10 before a pair of points brought King to a 13-12 deficit.
  • King would eventually work their way back and tie the set at 15 off back-to-back kills from Sean Haberthy and Kim before taking their first lead of the set at 16-15.
  • After the Tornado extended their lead to 21-18, Belmont Abbey rallied to tie the score at 21.
  • The teams would trade points to close the set, with King getting the final two points to win the set 25-23.
Second Set
  • The Crusaders took another early lead, opening the set on a 7-4 run before the Tornado got back to within 7-6 on a kill from Harris.
  • Belmont Abbey would hold the lead, eventually going up 15-11 despite a service ace from Aaron Milstead and multiple kills from Harris.
  • Coming out of a timeout, the Crusaders opened up a 19-12 lead on the strength of a 4-1 scoring run.
  • King would score twice after a timeout, but it wasn't enough to rally, as the Crusaders took the set 25-17.
Third Set
  • After being back-and-forth very early, the Tornado scored three straight points to take a 5-2 lead, later extending it to 7-3, forcing a timeout from the Crusaders.
  • Coming out of the timeout, Belmont Abbey scored three in a row to get to within 7-6.
  • The Tornado and Crusaders started to trade points, with King eventually getting kills from Joshua Kim and an ace from Haberthy to take a 17-13 lead.
  • After a Crusaders timeout, King extended the lead to 19-14 thanks to another kill from Kim.
  • The Crusaders would get to within two points at the end of the set, but Milstead recorded a kill to clinch a 25-22 set win, putting King up 2-1.
Fourth Set
  • Neither team was able to build a large lead early in the set, with King grabbing an 8-5 lead that would be the largest of the set for either team.
  • The Crusaders would get a two-point lead at 12-10, but King would score four straight points to take a 14-12 lead.
  • Belmont Abbey would respond in a big way, scoring three consecutive points to take a 15-14 lead heading into a timeout.
  • Coming out of the timeout, King fell behind 20-18 before embarking on a 4-1 run to take a 22-21 lead.
  • Harris picked up another kill to give King match point, up 24-23. They would win the set on an attack error, taking the set 25-23 and the match 3-1.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Sarnowski finished with 46 set assists, marking the sixth time this season he has cleared 40 assists.
  • Kim led the Tornado in kills, recording 17 while Harris had 15 kills.
  • Noah Melendez led both teams with 12 digs.
FOR THE FOES
  • Matteo Miselli led the Belmont Abbey attack, posting 22 kills, along with four digs.
  • Jack Walsh had 50 assists for the Crusaders, while Daniel Cerqua had eight digs to lead the back row.
UP NEXT
  • The Tornado will wrap up the regular season this weekend, hosting Barton College and Mount Olive. 
  • Belmont Abbey closes the season Saturday at Erskine.
