No. 10 King falls to No. 4 UNC Pembroke in CC Second Round

PEMBROKE, N.C. – The King University women's volleyball team saw their season come to an end on Sunday in the second round of the Conference Carolinas Women's Volleyball Championship at fourth seeded UNC Pembroke. Following a win early in the day, the 10th seeded Tornado fell to the homestanding Braves 3-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
  • UNC Pembroke scored the first six points of the set before an Abigale Jayne kill got the Tornado on the board.
  • The Braves followed with eight straight points to take a 14-1 advantage.
  • King fought back with a pair of kills from Hailee Blankenship and an ace from Paula La Mendola.
  • Blankenship added three more kills before a block from Katie Harless and Riley Nelson pulled King within 20-11 as the Braves called for a timeout.
  • King received kills from Nelson and Gracia Love, but the Braves took the set 25-13.
Second Set
  • UNC Pembroke started hot, scoring the first five points and taking a 12-1 lead to start the frame.
  • Blankenship and Bailey Fersner account for kills, but the Tornado couldn't get the offense going as the Braves took the set 25-9.
Third Set
  • UNC Pembroke again got off to a quick start, taking a 4-1 lead before the Tornado fought back.
  • King pulled within one a pair of times, the second following a kill from Nelson and ace from Zephanie Snyder that cut the King deficit to 8-7.
  • However, UNC Pembroke went on a pair of 3-0 runs to extend their lead to 14-9.
  • Following a King point, the Braves put the set out of reach with five straight points that started a 9-1 run.
  • King responded with a 7-1 run that was highlighted by three blocks from Snyder and Nelson to pull within 24-18.
  • However, the Braves scored the final point to take the set 25-18 and the match 3-0.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Blankenship led the way with eight kills and five digs while Snyder added four kills, five digs and three block assists.
  • Nelson added two kills and four block assists.
  • Harless handed out 14 assists and added six digs.
FOR THE FOES
  • Vanja Przulj led UNC Pembroke with 17 kills and 15 digs.
  • She was followed by Ruby Countryman who posted 14 kills.
  • Abby Peduzzi posted eight kills and 10 digs while Katie Pressley handed out 40 assists.
  • Kyleigh Coghlan registered a match-high 11 digs.
