Team effort leads Tornado to nonconference victory

BRISTOL, Tenn. – 10 different players found their way onto the scoresheet Tuesday night for the King University men's basketball team as they defeated local rival Emory & Henry College, 85-77. Satchel Love and Mikhail Pocknett both scored 13 points to lead the Tornado.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
  • It was tight early, with neither team working larger then a two point lead until the 16:18 mark, when the Wasps got an old fashioned three-point play to take a 12-8 advantage heading into a timeout.
  • The Tornado pulled back even at 18 with just under 12 minutes to play when Kenny Turner hit a driving layup.
  • King then pulled in front off another layup by Turner, though the Wasps didn't take much time to respond, taking a 23-22 advantage with 9:48 left.
  • The Tornado responded with a 10-6 run to pull ahead 31-29, with Dami Farinloye drilling a three ball with 6:08 remaining until the break.
  • Coming out of a timeout, the Wasps knocked down a three of their own, pulling even at 32 until a 5-0 Tornado run punctuated by an Amarius Beasley three that saw them establish their largest lead of the game up to that point, 37-32 with 2:48 remaining.
  • The Tornado continued to maintain their lead, hitting a pair of free throws in the final minute of the half to take a 43-35 halftime advantage.
Second Half
  • King came out and scored the first four points, including a Pocknett steal and dunk to stretch the lead to 47-35 not even a minute into the half.
  • The lead reached as much as 51-37 with 16:45 left off a Cam George pull up jumper.
  • Emory & Henry would work their way back, hitting a layup at the 13:03 mark to pull to within 57-50.
  • The teams would trade buckets over the next four minutes, with King able to maintain their lead, 66-58 with eight minutes left in the half.
  • King then scored 10 of the next 14 points, seven of which came courtesy of Almando Cyrius, stretching the lead to 76-62.
  • Love added a thunderous fastbreak dunk with 2:04 remaining to extend the lead to 80-64
  • The Wasps didn't go away, embarking on an 8-0 scoring run, pulling to within 80-72 with under a minute left.
  • The Tornado would go 3-of-4 from the line in the final 20 seconds to lock down an 85-77 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Love and Pocknett both scored 13 points, with Love adding six rebounds and Pocknett going 5-for-9 from the free throw line.
  • Farinloye had team-highs in rebounds (7), steals (4) and assists (3).
  • The Tornado had seven blocks from seven different players.
FOR THE FOES
  • Jacob Dar led the Wasps in scoring with 19 points, while Jake Moynihan added 15 and Gabe Brown contributed 10.
  • Moynihan also had nine rebounds, with three others dishing out five rebounds.
  • Patrick Antonelli had five assists for the Wasps.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • King will be off until Dec. 9 when they open Conference Carolinas play with a matchup at Converse University.
  • Emory & Henry will host Coker University Saturday afternoon.
