Tornado stumble at Barton

WILSON, N.C. – The King University men's volleyball team returned to the road on Friday night and fell at Barton College. The Tornado played well early in the sets, but the Bulldogs closed each set to take the match 3-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
  • Barton held a two point advantage early on before a Warren Davis kill and AJ Drooker block evened the score at 8-8.
  • King later led 11-10 before three straight Bulldog points gave Barton a two point advantage again.
  • The Bulldogs used a 4-0 spurt to gain more separation and eventually take the set 25-20.
Second Set
  • King got off to a hot start, taking a 4-2 lead behind kills from Kellan Kennedy, Mason Martindale and Drooker.
  • Barton later used a 3-0 run to take a 9-7 lead before the teams started to trade points.
  • The Bulldogs later broke a 13-13 tie with four straight points before King came back with kills from Drooker and Davis along with an ace from Martindale pulled King within 17-16.
  • Barton again pulled away late, using a 5-0 run en route to the 25-17 win.
Third Set
  • King again jumped out to an early lead, taking a 5-2 lead following a solo block from Martindale and block from Martindale and Sean Haberthy.
  • Barton evened the score at 7-7, and the Tornado broke a tie at eight with three straight points to take an 11-8 following pair of Davis kills that forced a Bulldog timeout.
  • Martindale came up with a block out of the break and Drooker added a kill to give King a 13-9 lead.
  • The Bulldogs chipped away at the deficit and evened the score at 17 as the teams traded points.
  • King held off a pair of Barton match points, but the Bulldogs answered with consecutive kills to take the set 26-24 and the match 3-0.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Drooker led King with 12 kills and seven digs while Davis added 11 kills and seven digs.
  • Aiden Olson handed out 36 assist to go along with six digs.
FOR THE FOES
  • Brandon Johnston led Barton with 10 and five digs while Jack Sandahl added eight kills and three digs.
  • Seth Deppe handed out 29 assists while Jacob Irmer posted nine digs.
UP NEXT
  • King travels to the University of Mount Olive on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
  • Barton hosts Lees-McRae College on Saturday.
