Tornado slide past Hawks

BRISTOL, Tenn. – Xavier Betancourt scored 26 points, with Mikhail Pocknett adding 21 as the King University men's basketball team won their second straight conference game, 90-79 over Chowan Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
  • King scored the first 11 points, with Seth Cullen scoring nine points, with the Tornado going 4-for-4 from the field in the blitzing start.
  • The Hawks scored 10 of the next 12 points, pulling to within 13-10 with 14:39 left in the half.
  • Chowan took a 28-25 lead with 6:37 left, after which Pocknett hit a three to tie the score at 28.
  • King pulled to within 41-39 with 37 seconds left, after which Chowan hit a three to take a 44-39 lead into the break.
Second Half
  • The half started with a flurry of scoring, with Chowan scoring six points in the first two and a half minutes, while King scored eight, with Betancourt and Cullen each scoring three.
  • Chowan took a 60-50 lead with 14:23 left, before King went on a 19-6 scoring run, with Betancourt scoring seven points to put King in front 69-66 with 6:32 remaining.
  • A short time later, King continued to pull away, going on an 8-1 run to take a 77-67 lead, forcing Chowan to take a timeout.
  • The Tornado closed the game on a 13-8 run, with Betancourt and Pocknett combining for all 13 King points, as the Tornado pulled away for a 90-79 win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Betancourt finished with a career-high 26 points, along with a team-best four steals and five rebounds.
  • Pocknett scored 23 points, making it the third time in the last four games that he has scored 20+ points. He has scored in double figures in ever game King has played this season.
FOR THE FOES
  • Daylan Askew scored 21 points, with Damerius Summers scoring 12 and RJ Wilson adding 11.
  • Summers also had seven rebounds, with Bailey and Cheick Traore both pulling six.
