BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University men's volleyball team fell in their season opener to Catawba by a final score of 3-1 on Wednesday evening.
THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Catawba 3 – King 1 (25-23, 23-25, 19-25, 23-25)

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
- King took the first three points of the set and led until Catawba tied the match at 6.
- Assisted with three aces, the Indians took a 9-6 lead before King brought the game to a tie again at 10.
- A kill from Justin Sawyer gave the Tornado a 15-14 lead, a lead that they would retain for the remainder of the set to win the opening frame 25-23.
- Sean Haberthy recorded 3 kills and JP Ribeiro had 10 assists. As a team, King had 5.5 blocks.
Second Set
- Alex Barkley opened the second set with a kill off the hands of Javi Saldivar.
- The entire frame was back and forth as neither team got more than a two point lead, but Catawba took the set 25-23.
- Barkley would get 5 of King's 15 kills.
Third Set
- Catawba took advantage of an early 10-4 lead and carried the momentum into a 25-19 third set victory.
- King struggled offensively recording just four kills.
Fourth Set
- The Tornado led for a majority of the final set but a late comeback from the Indians tied the match at 20.
- Colton Bueter had two kills out of the King timeout, both from Ribeiro but Catawba took the match with a 25-23 set four victory.
- Bueter recorded all four of his kills on the evening in the final set and helped with a service ace as well as two block assists on the front line.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
FOR THE FOES
- Trevor Phillips had a game-high 23 kills. Cam Reeder (11) and Jacob Brown (10) also contributed double-digit performances. Phillips also recorded 3 aces.
- Max Adkisson and Eli Zdonek each had 10 digs tying the game-high mark. Zdonek had 2 solo blocks and 2 blocking assists.
