Tornado battle with Barton, but fall in three sets

WILSON, N.C. – The King University men's volleyball team fell to Conference Carolinas opponent Barton on the road on Saturday afternoon.
 
THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Barton 3 – King 0 (25-20, 25-14, 29-27)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • King started the first set with four straight points, led by a kill from Alex Barkley.
  • The Tornado would lead the set for the early part until Barton closed the gap. The two teams traded points for most of the set, but the Bulldogs took the 25-20 opening set victory.
  • Alessandro Fermani, Colton Bueter, and Barkley each had three kills and King recorded four of their total 5 blocks during the first set.
  • Barton opened the second set with a 8-2 run. King trailed the whole set but attempted a comeback late scoring four in a row to bring the deficit to nine.
  • Buerter had four kills and Dalton Claiborne had three in the second set.
  • Barkley opened the third set with a kill from JP Ribeiro. Barton had a three-point lead at 8-5 but the rest of the third set was within two points of each other.
  • Out of a timeout, Barkley hit another kill to force extra serves. King took a 25-24 lead with another Barkley point.
  • The two teams battled until Barton got the two straight points to end the set in a 29-27 score.
 
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
  • Colton Bueter led the King offense with 13 kills and the only service ace of the game for the Tornado.
  • JP Ribeiro had 34 of the team's 38 assists and a team-high 13 digs.
  • Dalton Claiborne had a solo block and two blocking assists to help defensively on the front line.
 
UP NEXT
The King University men's volleyball team will finish their road-stand with a trip to Belmont Abbey on Wednesday, February 12 for a 7 p.m. match.
