BRISTOL, Tenn. - King College wrapped up the home portion of the tennis schedule with a 6-3 win in the women's match while the Tornado posted a 9-0 sweep Monday.
In women's play King had to rally after falling behind 2-1 in doubles. The lone Lady Tornado point came from Brittany Freund (Bluefield, W.Va.) and Eden Sherrod (Kingston, Tenn.) at No. 3. The duo posted an 8-1 decision. Freund went onto be a part of five King singles' wins with a 6-1 and 6-1 score. The only singles' contest that was won by the visitors was at No. 3.
Karissa King (Rockwood, Tenn.) came from behind to win at No. 2 singles' 3-6, 7-5 and 6-1.
Once again the No. 4, 5 and 6 singles for King helped in the win with a combined score of 36-6 in the three matches.
On the men's side King swept doubles 24-12 to gain the momentum early.
Jose Avila (Cuernavaca, Mexico) and Pablo Vidal (Madrid, Spain) won at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, but the duo needed three sets each.
The wins boosted the Tornado to 14-6 behind a five-match winning streak while the Lady Tornado owns a 12-8 record. During King's five-match winning streak on the men's side, three have been via 9-0 sweeps with an 8-1 score to start the winning ways.
Monday's contests marked the third time that King and Lenoir-Rhyne had played this season. When the men faced off the first time on Sept. 25 at Mars Hill King was a 5-1 winner and then posted a similar score Oct. 1 at Lenoir-Rhyne to close out the fall portion of the schedule. On the women's side King won 5-0 the first time and then the Lady Tornado used a strong finish to clinch a 6-3 decision.
King closes out the regular season Thursday with a trip to Newberry (S.C.) for a 3 p.m. match.
