Big eighth inning lifts Pfeiffer past King

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University baseball team fell in a Conference Carolinas series opener to Pfeiffer University 9-6. The Tornado held an advantage through most of the game but a big run in the eighth inning lifted the Falcons past King and the Tornado were unable to answer.

KING HIGHLIGHTS

  • Whitt led the Tornado with three hits, including a double.
  • Dayton posted a couple of doubles and drove in one run.
  • Hencken and Castaneda recorded a couple hits apiece.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Falcons jumped on the board in the first inning after Allende singled up the middle driving in two runs and then grabbed a quick three-up-three down in the bottom of the first.
  • In the bottom of the third Douglas threaded a single up the right side that drove in Castaneda who had earlier singled.
  • The Tornado rallied in the bottom of the fourth, fueled by a Stephens single through the ride side scoring Whitt who had earlier doubled.
  • Bailey then scored on a wild pitch and a Dayton double to left center drove in Stephens to take the lead 4-2 through four.
  • Pfeiffer closed in on the Tornado lead in the sixth inning of a McKenzie sacrifice fly scoring Scudder who has earlier singled.
  • King regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh after Whitt singled through the left side and scored Ganger who earlier walked, as the Tornado took the 5-3 advantage.
  • The Falcons fired back in the top of the eight scoring six runs on six hits, sparked by a run scored off a Tornado error that was a missed opportunity to turn a double play to end the inning.
  • Feeding off the King defensive miscue, McKenzie doubled to score a run, Lambert singled to score a run, and Stanley tripled to score two runs as Pfeiffer took a 9-5 lead.
  • The Tornado grabbed a run the bottom of the eight when Dayton doubled down the left field line and later scored on a Falcon error.
  • In an attempt to rally the Tornado posted two hits in the bottom of the ninth but were unable to drive any runs in leaving two on base as Pfeiffer took the 9-6 victory.

  • Scudder led the Falcons going 3-of-4.
  • Allende, McKenzie, and Stanley drive in two runs each.
