Bristol, Tenn. – The King University women's soccer team battled Belmont Abbey for 90 minutes but was unable to overcome a second-half surge, falling 2-0 in Conference Carolinas action on Tuesday afternoon at Parks Field.
After a scoreless first half, Belmont Abbey broke through in the 54th minute when Haley Long found the back of the net off an assist from Carmen Jones. The Crusaders added an insurance goal in the 64th minute as Long scored again, this time on a feed from Hannah Willis, giving Belmont Abbey a 2-0 advantage.
King created several quality chances throughout the contest, recording 11 shots with six on target. Vodi Mangal led the Tornado with two shots on goal, while Ella Froehlich, Paige Thompson, Allie Chase, and Melissa Adams each registered a shot on frame. However, Belmont Abbey goalkeeper Ryleigh Dougherty turned away all six King shots on goal to preserve the shutout.
Defensively, goalkeeper Susan Schaaf kept the Tornado in the match with eight saves as King faced a relentless Belmont Abbey attack that totaled 20 shots and seven corner kicks.
