King falls to Lander in double overtime

BRISTOL, Tenn. – For their third consecutive contest, the King University men's soccer team came back to even the score late and send the game against Lander University. However, on Wednesday the Bearcats found the back of the net in the 101st minute to hand the Tornado the 2-1 loss at Parks Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Tornado fended off many Lander attacks in the first half, with the Bearcats placing two shots on goal that were stopped by Kari Sveinsson.
  • King placed one shot on frame in the first half, but that too was turned away.
  • The Bearcats struck first in the 65th minute as Hugo Delhommelle found Steven Gonzalez in the middle of the box who finished to his lower left to beat the keeper.
  • Kendale Liburd created a scoring chance for King when he found Faber Bickerstaffe in the middle of the box in the 84th minute. Bickerstaffe then ripped a shot into the middle of the net to even the score.
  • King had the first scoring chance of overtime when Eli Carrasco ripped a shot in the 92nd minute that was saved by Barrett Nielson, the Bearcat keeper.
  • Late in the first overtime session, Sveinsson came up with a pair of saves to keep the contest tied and send it to a second extra frame.
  • It didn't take Lander long to net the game-winner in the second overtime. Only 41 seconds in, Jamie North played a ball from the left sideline 35 yards from the goal line that found Delhommelle in the box who took his shot back to the left and found the back of the net to give Lander the win.
  • Lander outshot King 28-6, including 15 shots on goal to King's three.
  • The Bearcats also had 14 corner kicks to King's one.

FOR THE FOES

  • The goal for Gonzalez was his first of the season.
  • Delhommelle registered his third goal of the season and his second game-winning goal this year.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • The Tornado have now played three straight double overtime contests, their most consecutive double overtime games since becoming NCAA Division II members.
  • King has also played four overtime games, their most since 2011 when the Tornado played six overtime games, including five double overtime contests.

  • The Tornado will be in action again on Wednesday, September 30 when they travel to Belmont Abbey College. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m.
  • Lander will take the field again on Wednesday, September 30 when they host USC Aiken.
