Tornado win NCWWC Southeast Region title, nine individuals crowned champions

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. — The King University women's wrestling team won the NCWWC Southeast Regional championship Saturday afternoon, along with nine individual champions and a total of 14 placewinners.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • At 101 pounds, Jaclyn McNichols received a first-round bye before winning a 2-1 decision over Angelina Gomez of Emmanuel to advance to the championship match, where she won 6-2 over Presbyterian's Samantha Miller to win the championship.
  • Samara Chavez and Danielle Garcia both had first-round byes at 109 pounds, with Chavez winning her second match 10-0 and Garcia winning via fall to set up a championship showdown, where Chavez won via fall in 1:51.
  • Dianna Holmes dropped her first match of the day at 116 pounds 9-2 before winning a 15-2 tech fall in the first wrestleback round. Her day would end with a pair of decision losses, placing her sixth.
  • Sage Mortimer also competed in the 116-pound bracket, winning her first match 10-0 before winning in the semifinals via pin over Kasey Baynon of Emmanuel. She suffered an 8-5 loss in the championship to Jaslynn Gallegos of Presbyterian to finish second.
  • Cheyenne Sisenstein won the 123-pound bracket, winning her first match via pin and her semifinal match 10-0. In the finals she faced teammate Malanie Mendoza, who won a 49-second fall and 8-0 decision to get to the finals match. In the championship, Sisenstein won 6-0 to claim the championship.
  • Montana DeLawder got a bye into the semifinals at 130 pounds, where she pinned Sierra Mar Miller of Presbyterian. She faced teammate Phoenix Dubose in the championship match, winning a 10-0 tech fall.
  • Dubose also received a bye into the semifinals, where she won a 10-0 tech fall to advance to the championship.
  • At 136 pounds, Ana Luciano received a bye into the semifinals before winning back-to-back tech falls to claim the championship.
  • Ashlynn Ortega had a similar day at 143 pounds, winning twice via tech fall to claim the championship.
  • Viktorya Torres started her day at 155 pounds with a 10-0 win over Skyla Armstrong of Emmanuel before earning a 6-1 decision over Caitlyn Gilmore of Limestone to reach the championship, where she faced off with teammate Tiffani Baublitz. Baublitz would win the matchup via fall in 1:03 to claim the championship.
  • That was just the second match of the day for Baublitz, who earned a first-round bye before winning 15-5 over Shelsy Renous of Limestone in the semifinals.
  • Chey Bowman received a bye straight into the championship match, where she won 10-0 over Kalani Rivas of Limestone to claim the championship.
  • Nia Crosdale rounded out the Tornado lineup at 191 pounds, winning both her matches 10-0 to take the championship.
