BRISTOL, Tenn. - The King Univeristy Student-Athlete Advisory Committee has chosen
Brennan Watkins and
Samara Chavez of the men's and women's wrestling teams as the Delta Blues King SAAC Student-Athletes of the Month for March.
Watkins, a junior from Kingsport, Tennessee, opened March with a third place finish in the 149 weight class after going 3-1 at the NCAA Super Region II Torunament to qualify for the National Championships. He then earned All-American status finishing in third place at the 2025 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships after going 5-1 in the tournament.
Chavez, a senior from Arlington, Texas, came into the 2025 NCWWC National Championships ranked no. 3 in her weight class. After winning her semifinal match over #2 Ava Bayless of Iowa, she dropped an 11-7 decision to top-ranked Sage Mortimer in the finals to finish 4-1 and with the silver medal and All-American status. Her efforts help the women's team to a fifth place finish as a team in the last national tournament prior to the NCAA sponsoring a women's wrestling championship.
